Leadership starts with ourselves. It starts with I. The ability to transform and to have meaningful relationships and sustainable impact starts from digging in, making the invisible visible, and uncovering our own stories. Our own imprints and cultural experiences shape who we are and our lens of the world. Our own unconscious habitual patterns or identities we have taken on may be leading us down a path that is not fully aligned with our purpose, passion and values. Yet, often we do not have time to pause and reflect. We may become overwhelmed, stressed, stuck and exhausted. We get caught up in getting from pt A to pt B that we often are not fully present to the journey before us.
Leadership is more than just the act of “doing”, directing, checking off the list, and getting things done. It is the art of BEING—the art of noticing, bearing witness, practicing self-care and compassion in relation to ourselves and others. It is about stepping into a journey of self-discovery through courage, curiosity, connecting, authenticity and willingness to change from within.
How we show up energetically in conversations, in our actions, emotions and behaviors have an impact. Taking time to notice the inner and outer conversations that we have with ourselves and others is so important in developing a conscious and resilient mindset. When we are stressed or overwhelmed, we react. We go into fight, flight, freeze or appease. Cortisol and adrenaline increase and this shifts our energy, mood, ability to listen, to be open. We goto into amygdala hijack. We make decisions that are rooted in fear, protect, mistrust and wanting to be right. The question, is how do we change course in these moments? How can we learn to co-regulate in the moment so that we see choose to respond vs react, to show up more present, centered and make choices with greater clarity and wisdom?
Learning to pause, to slow down, practice self-care, reconnect with nature have been life-changing and profound in so many ways and have inspired me to share these somatic practices in my coaching and leadership work. When we are grounded, we can tap back into our flow, creativity and choose what matters most to us with purpose and meaningful impact. We can recreate our stories so we can choose to take adventures with risks, learn from mistakes, grow along the way, think outside of the box and leap with faith.
How will you leave your mark in this world?
